My students need relevant and meaningful novels to read in class. I am requesting class sets of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, The Giver, and I Survived #8: The Japanese Tsunami.
My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. Big differences between my school data based on race and ethnicity may suggest that some student groups are not getting the support they need to succeed in reading.
It is hard to consider what I do as a job, because it is truly a part of who I am.
My Project
My students are asked to tackle tougher texts, learn challenging vocabulary, and refine research and analysis skills. They need relevant and engaging books in order for them to grow as 5th graders.
A big new skill for fifth graders is learning to take in, and analyze, multiple points of view.
The point is for my students to be able to take in the information and digest it accurately. Using the books that I have chosen will help them get there!
Along with expanding my students reading repertoire, this year I want to challenge my fifth graders to read novels that challenge their reading level and allow them to grow!
