Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach language arts and social studies in the dual language immersion program at my school. I have four different sections, two 6th grade classes, and two 7th grade. Many of my students come from minority groups, so they bring in an amazing mix of different cultures, traditions, and experiences. They are avid readers and enjoy finding new books.
All of my students are bilingual in English and Spanish.
It is truly fascinating to see (and hear) the kids interchanging the two languages. This is their world, a diverse world. Since an early age, and for some since birth, they have functioned in two languages. They have developed the ability to speak, write, and read in more than one language.
These are my students, diverse learners that are active, fun, intelligent, and kind. We are from many places, but our base and home is Madison, WI.
My Project
Creating a flexible reading area (oasis) in our classroom will give students the space and opportunity to read for fun in a “homey” place. We have been dreaming with this project to a long time but haven’t been able to do it due to lack of funding. I made some flexible seats by hand prior the beginning of the school year, but we are still in need of more comfortable chairs, a rug, and some other items that will make the reading corner look like a very engaging and cozy reading zone, a reading oasis.
I’ve talked with my 6th and 7th graders about the idea of creating this special space in our classroom.
They are very excited and have come up with creative ideas on how to decorate it and use it, making sure the each and every single student gets the chance to use the very special seats.
Your collaboration is very much appreciated. This year only 64 students will benefit with this project, and many more in the years to come.
