Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are from low income communities in NE Oklahoma City. They need extra support to become successful scholars. They are from diverse backgrounds and have unique perspectives. They have so much potential and much to offer. Many of my students are connected through strong community ties and go above and beyond to achieve in sports and academics. They deserve a classroom reading area because they might not get to read outside of school due to work and family obligations.
My Project
A reading nook with comfortable seating and good lighting will encourage students to read independently. The bean bag chair will provide comfortable seating the students will use to get comfortable and dive into a good, on level, book of their choosing. The rug will create the parameters of the space so the student knows they are there to focus on reading. The fan will help create white noise to help students focus. Reading is the foundation of all learning. Students need to associate reading with comfort and relaxation, so that they will continue to read on their own. Many students don’t get a chance to read at home due to their responsibilities and family distractions, so this quiet space will give them that experience. It will also be used as an incentive for on task behavior. This is a must have for my English students’ development of a love of reading.
