I teach at an alternative learning center as a math co-teacher and a SpEd case manager. In order for my students to attend my school, they need to be on track for not graduating or else be a teen parent. We provide smaller class sizes with Special Education teachers in most of the classrooms that work with the core content teacher to ensure that we are meeting the needs of all students. Many students at my school have experienced some form of trauma in their lives. Some students have Individualized Education Plans for Emotional Behavior Disorder, Specific Learning Disability (a much more difficult time in one area of learning), or Other Health Disabilities like ADHD. Our students are amazing people who would love the chance to shine in life.
My Project
Due to the trauma that many of our students have been through they are often stuck in flight, fight, or freeze mode. We are looking to create a safe space in the classroom that our students can go to read a book, to relax, or just to regulate their bodies. We have a large assortment of books for students to read and somewhere to sit, but we just need the last finishing touches to get the area setup.
Creating a warm and inviting space for the students to sit on comfy bean bag chairs and cuddle up to read a book will give them a place to be calm for a few minutes until they are ready to rejoin the classroom.
The soft blanket will keep them warm while there and the gum can help their brains focus again. Also, they will have sand and fidgets to use while in the space.
