Reading Nonfiction To Read The World

My students need nonfiction texts on a wide range of topics and at a wide range of reading levels. They also need a lamp for our classroom library.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Yes, the students at my school represent historically underserved groups; ninety-two percent are socioeconomically disadvantaged, and for more than half, English is not their first language. But I’m not telling you this to elicit sympathy. Rather, I’m saying this because these statistics show that our students are truly inspiring! While speaking another language at home and representing diverse populations is on the one hand a precious gift, it also presents daily challenges for the students at my school. Yet, despite this, the students show up each day. It is our responsibility to provide them a safe place to learn, grow, problem-solve, and thrive.

The thing is, students are innately and intensely curious about the world in which they live.

They are pioneers and explorers, ready to discover new things. They want to know about who they are and why they are. They want to get lost in a book and journey to new places, whether it’s another country, a civil rights protest, or Hogwart’s. These learning experiences are extremely empowering. Providing them with these tools and opportunities is also simply a matter of equity. Our students don’t just deserve these educational experiences, it is their right as children.

My Project

One of my favorite reading units in fifth grade is the Argument and Advocacy unit. In this unit, students study debatable and controversial topics, such as, "Should plastic water bottles and bags be banned?" Or, "Should people boycott zoos?" Concomitant to this reading unit is the Research Based Argument Essay writing unit, in which students write argument essays about something in their community they feel strongly about (an issue or injustice they feel is present), backing up their claim not just with opinion, but also (and mostly) with concrete facts and evidence. These units are perhaps the most empowering of the reading and writing units of the year, especially when they happen in conjunction with one another.

More than exposing students to particular topics in the reading unit, and teaching them how to research using valid sources and backing up their claims, these units support an even more valuable lesson: that these students have a voice that must be heard.

Learning how to critically read multiple sides of an argument, analyze authors' perspective and biases, and then draw one's own conclusions and opinions are skills that are critical for understanding the world. They are also skills that are critical for advocating for oneself and for one's community.

The books in this project will help my students harness these skills as well as help equip them with a critical reading lens. With these books, the students will analyze and critic a range of topics, culminating in debates with other students in the class. They will also present their opinions via panel discussions in front of other students at the school, the administration, and students' families.
