This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Reading non-fiction is an important reading skill, but it is often considered boring. My students want to be excited and entertained all the time. Help me show them that real life stories and current events can be exciting and entertaining.
My students are inter-city,low income students that don't see much of the world, beyond where they can walk.
What they do see is not usually a positive example for their lives. I teach at an alternative school, so this is the students' second and often last chance at earning their high school diploma.
My Project
I'm requesting two Scholastic magazines: The New York Time Upfront and O Choices. These magazines will be used with Junior and Senior English classes as well as a Speech class. Reading non-fiction, like newspapers and magazines is a life skill. This skill is something the students will take with them after graduation, they will be able to read and learn all of their lives.
Please help me open up the world to my students.
I want to show them that there is more to the "Real World" then what they can walk to. By reading non-fiction magazines they can see what is possible for their life.
