Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of twenty-four first grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime in the nation. All students at my school site receive a free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation in the United States. At least 15% of my students are newcomers to the country. School is one of the only places in which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.
Living and attending school in a highly impoverished urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.
Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.
My Project
This is the third year that my school has had a reading night before the end of the school year. I have the idea of giving each one of our traditional kindergarten, kindergarten, first, and second-grade students that attend the event an Elephant and Piggie Book by Mo Willems. I came up with this idea because the books are fun to read. Even if students cannot read words, they can read the pictures in these books. Additionally, these books are hardcover and would be a great addition to their own library or a great way to start a library at home.
Please give students at my school the opportunity to continue to read at home with a Mo Willems' Elephant and Piggie book.
Allow them to be immersed in reading while feeling entertained and engaged.
