This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This is my second year as a teacher in a large, urban elementary school. Working with students that come from low-income homes has its challenges. However, I wouldn't want to work anywhere else! In my Title I school in Virginia, 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast and 87% of the student body is a minority group. They come from some tough backgrounds but still continue to work hard and do all that they can to learn. I truly love what I do and I'm grateful to have such a great community of learners in my class and in our school!
DonorsChoose.org has helped bring supplies to our classroom that we couldn't have any other way.
I want my students to know that they are important. They deserve the best materials. No matter what.
My Project
My students need to read interesting books to stay engaged! It's no fun to have to sit and read boring books. In my class, our goal is to transition students from reading for a couple of minutes to reading for fifteen minutes or twenty minutes at a time. With practice, students will work their way to reading for a sustained amount of time before the end of the school year.
Interesting books play a major role in sustained reading time!
Without interesting chapter books, students are flipping between books again and again during a short period of time.
Please consider helping provide my students with high-quality, interesting chapter books and mystery books.
