Hello! I work in a small, rural area where some kids do not have internet access at home. It's a farming community, a blue collar, hard-working community. Most of the older kids have jobs on farms.
They are hard-working kids, with snazzy personalities.
They don't, for the most part, let life get them down. They are good, solid kids from good families. I really am enjoying them... and the best part? I see them for five or six years in a row so I really get to know their personalities. Sometimes I have them over to my own house for class dinners!
My Project
This project is aimed at improving reading comprehension skills for second language learners.
I plan on using these novels in class for our classroom library during Leer Lunes, a sustained silent reading initiative.
Students are able to choose which book they would like to read, every Monday. I am hoping that with sustained reading in their second language, their reading comprehension skills will increase. Almost every novel comes with a small glossary in the back.
Students will also fill out weekly reading reflections or journal entries, according to the novels that have been read, to prepare and share with the class.
The ultimate goal is to increase reading comprehension scores.
