This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Do you ever remember thinking, "when am I going to use this in the real world?" This is a question I am constantly trying to answer with my students in their math and science classes.
My 4th graders go to a public charter school.
They are extremely hard working and have high aspirations to go to college and beyond. They are inquisitive and enjoy asking questions. They especially love to discover new information in science.
My Project
I hope to use these magazines to supplement my teaching of the Common Core curriculum in math. There has been an increase in rigor with these new standards and I think that the math magazines will help bring a fun twist to math. They will be able to see current stories of how math is begin utilized in the real world.
The science magazines will help expose my students to the non-fiction writing that appears so often in science. This will help prepare them for upcoming grades as well as make real world connections to the material that we are learning in class.
If my students were to add these science and math magazines to our library, they would truly be able to make a connection with both of these subjects.
They could dive into the world of math and science and truly see how these subjects have an impact on their everyday lives. This could be the year where they really fall in love with the act of learning math & science.
