This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My second graders are eager to learn about current events and science. I want to capitalize on student interests and push my students' learning to their greatest capacity.
My second graders are 22 students from Spanish-speaking backgrounds.
My students are eager to learn new things and have a passion to learn about what's going on in the world. They want to read books that provide them information. My school is located in the heart of Roxbury, Boston.
My Project
My students need 10 subscriptions to TIME For Kids and books including a Mo Willems set, a Tomie dePaola set, and a Steve Jenkins set. My students will use the magazines during our social studies and science blocks. I plan to project the lesson, read the information, and then have students independently read the magazines. I've also requested popular stories so students can continue to have great books available to them during their independent reading block. Our goal so far is to read for 30 minutes, and we are now at 10 minutes. I need great books so that all students can reach this goal.
Donations will improve my classroom because this project will build on my second graders' literate lives.
During the first week of school, I have seen my students' passion to gather new information about how words work and what's going on in the current world.
