My Students
"Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life" (Mortimer Adler) I believe that being able to read well is the foundation for a successful life. Unfortunately, many students struggle with reading daily. This not only affects their achievement in school, but it also effects their self-esteem. I regularly will hear that "I am stupid" and "I can't do this so why bother." My goal is to give my students the tools they need in order to help them not only improve their reading skills but to give them future opportunities to reach their goals in life.
I teach 6th grade special education in a small town.
My students are very bright and eager to learn. Most of my students are diagnosed with having a learning disability and several have ADHD. My students are all in the general education classroom with me as a support teacher. With daily accommodations and extra assistance, they are able to be successful both academically and socially.
My Project
Most of my students struggle with reading. When you struggle with something you are not motivated to improve. My students need reading material that will inspire them and open a whole new world to them.
Scholastic magazine will allow my students to practice their reading with a higher level interest level and let them explore what is happening in the world and possibly lead to an interest in making reading a habit.
Scholastic magazines also come with additional material that supplements the articles, such as videos, projects and assessments. This subscription will give my students their own magazine to use.
