My Students

My students all participate in the dual language program here at our school. They learn in Mandarin Chinese for half of the day and English for the other half. They are bright and excited to learn new things every day when they come to school. It's so fun to see the global view that learning from a native Chinese teacher gives them.

Learning in two languages is so beneficial to their overall education, but it doesn't come without its challenges.

When in English class, I need to teach them everything in half the time. Technology is a tool that I utilize daily to keep them learning efficiently.

My Project

My students spend half of their academic day in an all Chinese speaking classroom. It gives them a great opportunity to learn another language, but it makes it so I need to be twice as efficient with my instruction in English. I need to be very deliberate with the reading materials I choose. If I can hit more than one standard with one lesson, it really helps me get through the curriculum.

These reading materials will help me integrate social studies and science content in my reading block.

Students participate daily in deliberate partner reading based on their Lexile. These materials will give these partners something interesting to read together to practice fluency as well as reinforce science and social studies content.
