Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Every day brings new and welcomed challenges, but the one thing that remains constant is their interest and passion in wanting to learn. Based on their last test scores, they range from urgent intervention to intervention. Their passion for education motivates me daily to ensure that they achieve.

My school is one of the lowest performing school in the state.

It I believe has weathered many storms; academic, financial and the loss of qualified and capable educators. Many have moved on to more lucrative positions. However, there are many of us who decided to stay as we want to make a difference in these students' lives. Most of my students are from single parent families living in one of the lowest-income, poverty stricken area where young men are dying daily from violence. Education is sometimes viewed as the LEAST in the community's priorities. The school struggles as like many other schools to have any type of parent involvement. But it continues to implement and introduce activities that will peak their interest with the hope that it will increase their knowledge and interest. Just today, our school hosted our 1st Parent MATH workshop with games, and many other activities geared towards educating our parents in the work their children will bring home as homework.

My Project

Our school does not have a library so it is my intent to build our very own library in the classroom. My students absolutely love when it is reading time even though they are not quite able to read the few books I bought. As a matter of fact some have read them all (taking them home to read) while others have PICTURE read them. We are in need of ALL types of reading books! Having a variety of books would add so much joy to these young ones. Their challenge for this year is simply to increase their love for reading while increasing their LEXILE levels. Just today, we completed our first project using QR codes to display their work on the school's bulletin board. The aim is that if they ALL increase their scores, then we will visit NYC at the end of the school year! The Competition is on in earnest. But what is heart-warming is how they play active roles in each others lives motivating each other to do better.

Increased Comprehension = Increased Lexile Levels.

It is definitely a Win- Win situation. 1. Improves the Safety of Society- It is believed that literacy can lower the crime rate. 2.Improves Education Success- Education success is very dependent on reading abilities. 3. Improves the Standard of Living-In accordance with the previous two points, literacy can help improve the standard of living. This improvement will be beneficial in all subject areas.
