I have an amazing and unique group of first graders. Unfortunately, they have had a couple of difficult weeks, enduring the hardships of beginning a new school year without a permanent teacher. However, I am happy to say that these amazing students are ready to learn and give it their all.
Each and every one of my students is unique and special in their own way.
I have such a broad spectrum of personalities, learning styles, and academic standings in my class. However, what all of my students seem to have in common is their love for books. This week we have been learning how to read with someone for understanding and they all did an extraordinary job. I was happy when I overheard one of my students ask her partner, "Do you think the character will do it?". YES!!! Our lesson on inferring (predicting) was a success.
First grade reading is one of the most important and exciting learning periods for a child. For this reason, I feel that it is essential for me to do everything in my power to help my children find joy and meaning in reading as it is how they develop their reading skills. However, this classroom has a very small library that does not meet the needs of all my students. The other day one of my students told me that she couldn't find any books at her level that interested her. So we went together to look at the library and realized that there were only 10 books at her reading level. If the book a child is reading is too difficult, it will lead to frustration; too little of a challenge will lead to boredom.
To make sure that all of my students' needs are being met I decided to select various bundles of books that meet my student diverse reading levels.
I also made sure to find books that fit their many interests. For example, I have several students that love to read about animals and our solar system, hence I included books about those topics. I also have students that are interested in comic books, therefore I included some comic books to ensure that those students needs are also met. This project will help my students understand and enjoy the book for reading success. It will ensure that students have books that are just right for their needs.
