Remember the first time you read a book by yourself? That feeling is what I am trying to repeat in my students as their imaginations are captured by different authors who take them to different places and times. Reading aids in comprehension, and that helps in all other subjects.
Our school is in a rural area of Arizona.
83% of our students families are economically challenged. Since our school is so small, budgets for extra student items do not exist. I would like to provide E-readers to my students to make reading easier for them and make the books available to them in one place. The students have worked hard to improve their reading, and in doing so have realized better grades not only in Language Arts, but in other subjects, too.
My Project
At this time, we have no after-school program to better our students in language arts, although tutoring is offered one-on-one to any students who request it. This proposed after-school program would offer that additional language arts experience. E-readers allow me to put all of the books for an individual student in one place. The student reads at or above the level they are placed without any problem. Books can be adjusted as the reader improves. By providing a means to read outside of class, the students become more involved in reading. The E-reader is easy to carry and to charge. This makes it more useful than a heavier, larger book.
By donating to supply my students with these readers, any donor can be assured that students are directly affected.
Providing these E-readers allows my students to read at home, on the bus, in the car, in the classroom and many other places where carrying a book would be more difficult.
