Help me give my students high interest, age appropriate literature to read so that they are engaged in the learning experience, building background knowledge, and expanding their vocabulary!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have the privilege of teaching 130 bright, young scholars who are at a pivotal age in which learning can either be a bore or exciting- I want them to be excited and engaged every day! The only way to achieve this goal is through offering them books that they find highly interesting.
My students have a zest for life and thirst for knowledge; however, our campus does not have an interesting reading selection for them.
We are highly populated with at-risk youth who need to expand their schema, vocabulary, and reading stamina so that they are successful not only in core classes, but in life beyond the classroom.
My Project
Having a library will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create. My classroom library currently lacks novels that students enjoy. This initiative will provide them with books that they are excited to read! All of the requested books have been chosen with my students' interests in mind. I've observed their likes and dislikes, areas where they need to grow academically and personally, listened to some of their struggles, and noticed what texts they enjoy. Students will be able to select books that are relatable and fascinating which will help them to enjoy independent reading time.
New additions to my classroom library will afford students with the opportunity to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to select interesting books at their current reading level and strengthen their comprehension and fluency over time.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in independent reading, and this project will only help enrich their experiences with the printed word.
