Please help reading magic come alive in our classroom and help share the gift that is the joy of reading. I teach a 2nd and 3rd grade multi-age classroom in a high-need community.
The children I work with are at a distinct disadvantage when it comes to the amount of language they have experienced from birth. According to Hart and Risley in their book Meaningful Differences in the Everyday Experience of Young American Children, in a 5,200-hour year, the amount of language a child in a professional family would have access to would be 11 million words. A child in a working class family would have access to 6 million and a child from a welfare family would have access to 3 million. Over 4 years, this would amount to 13 million fewer words that a child from poverty would have access to. I would love to give our children the ability to listen to quality children's literature independently to help bridge this gap in their language development and to foster a lifetime love of reading.
I am hoping to get 2 CD Walkmans and some wonderful children's literature on CD so that our children can have access to these stories in addition to the read alouds we will share in the classroom. These Walkmans will help stories come alive for my children and help them discover the joys of reading.
Your help with this project will truly make magic reading come alive in my classroom!
