We live, learn and grow in a small city in Montana. We are a Title I school that is blessed with unbelievably hard-working, caring families. Our town still believes in the power of neighborhood schools, and our staff works very hard to make our school a valuable part of our neighborhood.
My students are amazing.
Our second grade classroom is filled with brilliant, enthusiastic learners. They come to me from a wide variety of backgrounds, and with an extensive array of interests. I am blessed every day to be able to call them my kids.
My Project
My 2nd graders have been looking forward to spring all year. That was when we were scheduled to begin reading Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone together, as a project for the end of the school year. Now, with our schools being closed for COVID-19 mitigation, we might not be allowed to be back together this year. We are all heartbroken, and trying to stay connected and keep learning during the closures.
Providing each child with a copy of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone will allow us to come together each day in a private, online video format.
We may not be able to be in school, but we can still have our read-aloud time. I will be able to assign the interesting and fun learning activities that focus on the book for their online learning. If schools do reopen this year, this project will keep us on track time-wise and ready for all of our end of the year magic.
This project is one of my most impactful every year, mainly because it gets my students hooked on a fabulous book series, and makes them WANT to read over the summer. They can't wait to start book #2 after we finish. I have seen great results in stopping the "Summer Slide" decrease in reading skills that many students experience. I'm worried that the problem will be compounded with school closings. Please help me support my little ones in this scary and confusing time!
