My students want to learn but often struggle in school because they don't have the basics that they need for school. We live in a very isolated location, which means that many students don't get to leave the area. This isolation can limit their experiences if we are not careful. We are in a geographically isolated area with limited financial resources and students don't always get the opportunity to do STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) activities of their own choosing.
Students want to have good lives so they need to learn about places and things outside of our rural area to prepare them for life!
My Project
Imagine being 5 or 6 and living in an area that is 75 miles from a mall! Imagine rarely seeing students of other races. That is how our students live.
Students need to have Scholastic News Magazines so that they can learn about other people in other cultures.
This is really important because we live in an area that is very isolated (in the Southern Appalachian Mountains) and some of our students are not exposed to people who are different than them in any way. Our population is EXTREMELY homogeneous and I want students to learn about others!
These Scholastic News magazines will open discussions and learning about the world, about other cultures and about people who are DIFFERENT than us in order to help our students appreciate the diversity.
