This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a small, rural county in North Carolina. The majority of the student population come from low-income households. Many families work to provide very basic needs within their homes. Over 98% of our students are a part of the free or reduced lunch program.
When my students walk in each morning, I see leaders that are striving for an education that will provide them with opportunities to reach beyond their current situations.
My students are ambitious, hard working students that are determined to be successful and live out their dreams! When I look at them, I see the future!
My Project
The sets of books chosen for this project will be used in the classroom to support reading literacy. Most of the books will be used during small group instruction to help students increase comprehension, vocabulary, and enhance other skills determined by State Standards. Other books included in this project are high interest books for this age group that will be used in peer literature circles.
When students have access to high interest books, enjoy, and comprehend what they are reading, it opens doors to endless opportunities.
I hope to develop a love for reading within my classroom by providing grade level appropriate books and guiding them into a world of endless opportunities through literacy.
