Help me give my students headphones for listening to stories, nonfiction information and watch videos that help them learn on the computer as well as books on their personal reading level to read independently or with a peer.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I have 22 first grade students who range from ages 6-7. Our classroom is very diverse. Students come from different areas in the city to our school. Being very diverse gives each of my students the ability to learn with and from each other.
My first grade students love reading and writing whether in a book, on a paper, using a chromebook or in the computer lab.
Students seem to be engaged with their work when they get to use technology as well as choose the books they will be reading.
My Project
The headphones will allow my students to listen to books being read, do research online and have it read to them when they cannot read the information on their own as well as watch videos to help them learn. Students are engaged when on the computer working. Having books or information read to a student who is struggling helps to give them that extra push and motivation. I also have students in class who are English language learners. Listening on the computer helps these students to connect words, feelings and descriptions. The hooks will be used to hang the headphones so that they are put away neatly in the classroom.
The books will help to enhance the print rich classroom that I am striving to create for my first graders.
We currently have a classroom library labeled by authors and themes as well as a bookshelf full of books we have read aloud in the classroom. We also have some books in our leveled library for students to book shop and read in their box of books however as my students reading ability soars the less and less books they have to choose from when book shopping. These books will give those students whose reading ability grows more choices on their reading level which in turn will keep them engaged in their reading and help their reading ability continue to grow.
