This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students live and learn in Chicago's south side. They are a diverse and highly curious group of students. They love learning through inquiry and sharing what they have accomplished. I teach reading, math, and social studies to a wonderful group of 5th graders.

My students come from ethnic, socioeconomic, and religiously diverse backgrounds.

This year, my class is composed of English language learners, diverse learners, and hearing impaired students. We continuously celebrate our differences and learn from each other!

My Project

In my classroom, we love to read! Our reading block is one of the best times of our day. Our only problem is our lack of books. This project will allow the my 5th graders the ability to each read their own copy of the book Maniac Magee by Jerry Spinelli. Having their own book in their hands will allow students to read at their own pace while sharing the experience of connecting with one another through text.

Maniac Magee is a high interest text that tackles the subjects of racism and homelessness.

Our diverse, urban, classroom will benefit from the discussions of tolerance inspired by this novel. These conversations and lessons are of the utmost importance!
