When students engage with texts, they take control of their literacy and it becomes rewarding in so many ways. For me, teaching language arts involves a responsibility to foster a love of reading and help students reach beyond words that are printed on paper.
My students are from a middle school in California.
They are a lively bunch of eighth graders who are eager to learn and full of curiosity. They enjoy challenging themselves, and helping each other explore the new ways of learning I present them with. They are especially eager to start their very first literature circle groups.
My Project
The resources I am requesting will enable my students to use the techniques and skills they acquire in mini lessons. Students will apply those techniques to read complex material and set them up to be successful for the next grade level so they can master the common core standards with ease. With the books provided, students will be able to engage in literature circles with their peers reading the same books and have the opportunity to further explore various perspectives surrounding the theme of overcoming hardships and oppression.
In addition, these novels would provide students with a book to use in regular, small group meetings to open up peer discussions and allow students to make connections and practice strategies centered around analyzing and comprehension.
Literature Circles enhance the learning experience and provide students a unique and invaluable learning tool.
They allow students the necessary time to converse academically with their peers and explore literary devices and author's purpose. In addition, they deepen student understanding and promote critical thinking so all students can become sophisticated readers.
