My Students

My students are eight years old when they come to me. The are eager to learn. Our classroom community is a very open, honest and safe environment. They are able to focus on learning without worrying about being bullied or embarrassed. Mistakes are proof we are learning is our motto.

Our leaning community consists of lower income families.

Therefore, students do not have much exposure to print. In addition, many do not have vehicles to get to a library for books.

My Project

Having a library full of interesting books to read at different ability levels, is very important for students learning to read.

Our school is a high poverty school; therefore, many students do not have books of their own to read at home.

Many of the parents do not have vehicles; therefore, the students do not visit the public library.

Third grade students are able to read chapter books for the first time. Having many levels and choices encourages them to read. Having many books will allow me to send home books for them to read at night every day of the week.
