My students need books to increase their love of reading.

I am a Reading Specialist in a low-income school. I work with students in grades 5-8 who struggle with comprehending what they are reading. I want to improve their skills in order to better prepare them for college. The biggest drawback is their lack of interest in the current reading material.
My students are in grades 5-8.
They are generally reading 1-2 levels below their classmates. I work with them in a small class setting and there are 10-15 students working with me at one time. Many of the students are not engaged in reading because it is difficult for them and the materials are not age appropriate. They find the material to be too babyish.
With this resource, I will be able to teach literary elements to all of my students. The boxed set includes 6 copies of 8 student books. By securing two boxed sets each of my 12 students will be able to have his or her own book. Focusing on learning the literary elements is easier when they each have a book and not photocopies of worksheets. The literary elements covered with this set are character, figurative language, foreshadowing and flashback, plot, point of view, setting, theme, tone and mood. Each student book includes 4-6 engaging stories, poems, or plays that are perfect for learning the specific literary elements.
Donations to this project will provide students with individual resources that they need to master the skills necessary to meet language arts standards.
More importantly, there is nothing greater than reading, and understanding what we read. Becoming a lifelong reader can have a profound impact on ones life because reading open doors and takes us to places that we might otherwise be unable to go.
