This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a reading specialist, I work with struggling readers in first and second grade. Reading does not come easily to many of my students. These students will become good readers, but they need a little help.
We have both academic challenges and significant socioeconomic challenges.
At my school 100% of our students qualify to receive free or reduced-price lunch, meaning it is categorized as "highest poverty." All students deserve the same educational opportunities, and my students are at a disadvantage.
I try to give my students quality instruction, quality materials, and a quality learning environment.
My Project
As a reading specialist, I frequently check the reading levels of my students. With a student's current reading level, I can better target each student's reading needs and measure their reading growth.
My students and I could benefit from a kit of our own to use whenever we have a spare minute; currently, I am sharing my kit with several other teachers.
It would make everyone's lives easier if we did not have to share and "reserve" the materials in this reading kit.
With my own kit, I could be a little more spontaneous, taking advantage of that just right moment with students.
