Our class mission statement is: "Be more awesome!" Our class decided that this was fitting after watching Kid President's Pep Talk Video. We knew that to make the world a better place, we all need to be a little more awesome. They explained to me that this means to be kind, smile at people, & learn!
My first graders are amazing little people.
They are amazed by how much they have learned in these first four weeks of school and seeing their big smiles with how proud they make themselves makes teaching them everything it's meant to be and so much more. They are responsible, self-checkers, helpful, and take pride in being kind.
Our school is a Leader In Me school. Each student in our school is a leader and there are various leadership jobs inside and outside the classroom. By learning the seven habits, the students have learned to be proactive, set goals, and work together. Within my classroom, I have watched first graders talk through problems without any prompting from me. I have watched my entire class take on a Kindness Challenge that I presented to them to make sure that every child at recess had a friend to play with. I have witnessed a student saying to another student, "Thank you for filling my bucket today." The Leader In Me program has had a great impact on our students!
My Project
Every morning when I announce to the class that it is time to begin Daily 5, I hear an excited, "Yayyy!". Daily 5 takes place during our literacy block. During this time, I am meeting with guided reading groups and so therefore, the rest of my students are working on meaningful work. The different areas are: Read To Self, Read To Someone, Listen To Reading, Word Work, and Work On Writing.
My students love to use dry erase boards to practice sight words. These dry erase boards would be used during the Daily 5 time for sight word practice, during our whole group Shared Reading poem when we are practicing writing our sight words and spelling words, and during math. They will also be used for handwriting practice.
The wipe on/off pockets will also be used during Daily 5 and in guided reading groups. With these, we are able to slip in various activity sheets and the students can reuse them.
Students enjoy using both of these items and when they enjoy the activities, they learn better!
Donations for this project will greatly impact my students' learning.
They truly enjoy using these items and I feel they learn better when they are excited to use different products to enhance their learning. These would greatly benefit our literacy block and even enhance our math time. These hands-on activities will greatly enhance the learning of my visual and kinesthetic learners!
