I currently teach a wonderful group of first graders in a Title I school in Brooklyn. Seventy-five percent of the students in my school receive free lunch, and approximately three-quarters of my students speak a second language.
Given that many of my students are first-generation Americans, learning to read and write is especially difficult for them, as there is minimal support at home due to the language barrier. Although my students work hard and are motivated, the school's resources are limited.
For this reason, I am requesting funding for additional sets of books at different reading levels for our classroom library. I would also like a Language Learning Center from Lakeshore Learning--a set of eight language-instruction activities, each with materials for four students, an instruction chart, and a write-and-wipe assessment card to track children's progress. The activities include learning rhyming sounds, printing letters, and letter recognition.
It is my goal to provide the children with materials that they may bring home to re-read with family members (most students do not visit the library or have books of their own at home). The children get a sense of fulfillment and joy when they succeed at reading a text, and I want them to share that joy with their families. Currently, my book supply is scarce, and for that reason I limit the materials the children can take home to just one book per week.
If I had more books, the children would have more opportunities to bring books home, and would have a wider variety of texts to expand their learning. I would deeply appreciate a donation of funding for books and a Language Learning Center, and even more, my children would appreciate and benefit from it. Thank you for your consideration.
