Help me give my students the ability to become more fluent readers and better mathematicians!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Located in a high needs community, our school is striving to give our students every opportunity to be successful and foster a love for learning. I teach at a Title I school where 100% of my students receive lunch as part of the free and reduced price meal program. Many of my students come from low-income households. I truly believe in equal education for all children and this is my main goal on a daily basis. I refuse to allow being low-income to be an excuse for why my students and classroom don't have everything that my students need and deserve to become better readers and mathematicians.
Although many of them face adverse experiences in their home lives, my students come to school each day with an energy and excitement for learning and for each other.
As a teacher, it it my goal to continue to foster this energy and excitement. As a second year teacher, I lack the materials and resources to always make this happen but will continue to strive for excellence in my teaching!
More then 3/4 of my class is reading well below grade level and performing at a Pre-K level for math. It has been proven the most effective way to build bridges over these deficits is small group instruction. Small group allows me to meet the students where they are at and really gear the lesson to their needs and ability. In Language Arts I have some students who are still working on letter sounds and other students who are reading, this makes it difficult to reach such a varied group. Small group allows me to plan for the group's needs and group the students by need and ability. Small group is a struggle in any classroom, due to the fact the other students need to be engaged and allow the teacher this time to help the group. By donating to this project you are helping me to get centers for my class that will be engaging and effective. These centers will be fun for the students while also helping them to become stronger at many different language arts and math skills. These centers will also allow the students to be engaged while I am pulling my small group. This is so important for the students of my classroom and will really give me the opportunity to meet each student where they are in both math and language arts.
