Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I love the students at our school. Ranging from grades 6-11, these students who come from all over the District of Columbia have committed to an international education that includes advanced study of foreign language. As we are still a start up school, students are also extremely passionate about shaping their school experience, and are given multiple opportunities for ownership as the school continues to grow.

My students are multilingual, inquisitive, and extremely caring towards one another and our community.

They are especially excited and passionate about our new school library, which has just opened this year! Students have helped us with almost every aspect of opening our library, including organizing books, processing new books, shelving, working with our online system and curating our selection. Students are eager to make the library program a big part of our school community.

My Project

The last time you read an incredible book, you probably didn't rush to fill out a worksheet or write a summary. Great stories beg to be shared and discussed.

Unfortunately, many of our students do not see themselves represented in the majority of published literature for young people, nor do they have frequent opportunities to discuss what they're reading in an informal setting.

Enter Project LIT Community book club. Project LIT is a national grassroots LITeracy movement: a network of teachers and students leading club chapters that are committed to book access, monthly community book clubs, celebrating reading, inspiring, and supporting one another.

Our Middle School Project LIT chapter at DCI aims to amplify student voice, read and discuss high quality books, center stories written by authors of color, and promote a love of reading in our community. Each month we come together to discuss a book over breakfast. Our meetings are completely student planned and led and are open to the entire community. We need multiple copies of each of the eight books students have selected to discuss for book club this year. Any amount of support is greatly appreciated!
