Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My co-teacher and I have been blessed with a group of students that are unique, kind, and artistically skilled children. These children challenged us, as well as reminded us to laugh daily. So much so, that we decided to move up to the 5th grade with them; therefore, we were their 4th grade teachers, and now we are their 5th grade teachers! 40% of our class are students with special needs. Their special needs include learning disabilities, ADHD, sensory processing disorder, auditory processing disorder, as well as Autism Spectrum Disorder. Our students know their diagnosis does not define them and that they are able to learn and will learn. We have found that all of our students are kind, generous, and smart human beings that want the best for those around them. While my co-teacher and I are the teachers of the classroom, our students have taught us so much more than we could ever teach them!
My Project
Our classroom library is in need of some serious remodeling! My students have expressed what they are in need of, and I am here to deliver with your support! These books reflect their interests, as well as their cultures. Books such as, The Sandwich Swap and Same, Same but Different teach students the importance of being different and that it is okay. In addition, books like Let the Children March, educate our students in the power of speech and how they can make a difference.
I want my students to come into a classroom and be welcomed by books that reflect who they are, and how they can make a difference.
I want our students to have a voice! These books are not only high-interest level based on student choice, but also reflect their cultures, languages, religions, and disabilities. These books will give my students power!
