The students at our school are hardworking, loving, tough and on their way to success.
Our student population is full of diversity, with English Language Learners, students who have just moved California and students who have lived in Oak Park their entire lives.
The scholars thrive on their differences and help each other achieve common goals.
Our school tries to accommodate all students by providing electives students will enjoy. Some of these electives consist of puzzles and games, basketball, chess club, soccer, academic extension and weight lifting. Our scholars are well-rounded, and we hope to provide them with everything we can to make them happy and to create a desire to learn.
One of the clubs we want to start up is a book club. Unfortunately, these students do not have a library or modern books to promote reading. We need books that will encourage students to step out of their comfort zones.
Many of our scholars come from diverse backgrounds, and they would benefit from seeing themselves in the texts they read. We hope to continue to make our school a safe, fun and caring!
My Project
Reading is power! This is something I tell my scholars every time they claim to hate reading. "Reading is power" means reading is knowledge gained. It means the power to be creative, it means the power to advance reading skills and it means the power to understand the world from a new perspective. Our school wants our students to understand the power of reading and help them get lost in a fantasy world.
In order to prove that reading is power, we have to provide students with books they want to read which will leave them feeling empowered.
The hope is that with new, modern and relate-able books, our students will not only like to read but thrive on the stories and encourage others to read as well.
