Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"So it is with children who learn to read fluently and well: They begin to take flight into whole new worlds as effortlessly as young birds take to the sky." —William James
My students hail from a high-poverty neighborhood.
They are learning to read not only in their native language, but also in a second language which they are still learning. Some of my students this year have speech impediments which result in limited vocabularies, but I want them to feel proud of their accomplishments just like their peers do.
My Project
My students need sight-word practice cards, sight-word sentences center, sight-word talking boards, and read-alongs to build reading fluency. My students need constant exposure to language in order to build their vocabularies. The talking sight-words boards will provide my students with a model they can mimic if they are unsure of how to read a word. The sight-word centers will provide my students with hands-on practice so they are able to work with their sight-words in more than one way. The read-aloud books will allow my students to hear fluent reading and will help with word recognition. Using different approaches to teach the same method will result in retention without them getting bored.
In order to be able to reach every student this year, it is imperative that I have resources to work with every student.
Although my students may not be able to express themselves in the same manner as their peers, I want them to understand that they are just as capable of doing great things. These resources will boost their confidence and give them the motivation they need to succeed in other areas.
