Help me give my students high interest novels that relate to the CATE (Career and Technology Education) programs they are studying to improve literacy skills for future employment success.
Located in an area that was formerly dominated by the textile industry, our school serves many students that come from lower socio-economic backgrounds. Many choose to come to our CATE (Career and Technology Education) center to experience success with hands-on skills that they do not find in the traditional classroom setting.
For some students, our specialized classes are the only reason they get up and come to school each day.
One of our students actually recently completed four different programs including welding, automotive technology, precision tools, and advanced integrated technologies. Our school provided him with skills that would have otherwise taken him years to get through on-the job training. He is just one of many success stories at our school of students who will have a better chance for a brighter future.
My Project
My goal is to instill in students a life-long love for reading and help them appreciate the many benefits it affords them not only now, but after they enter the workforce. I plan to share with them research on the positive benefits of reading including how it increases language comprehension, vocabulary, brain activity, and higher levels of empathy and emotional intelligence. These are all important skills needed to communicate effectively with others, which is key to being successful in today's workforce. Then I plan is to match students with books of interest related to their programs of study. For example, there is a series of adolescent novels by Michael Vey about a boy with electrical powers. I would pair this series up with students taking our electricity class where they could not only read for enjoyment but also examine and discuss electricity principles included in the book.
Working with students on employability skills at a CATE (Career and Technology Education) center, I see the great need to encourage independent reading skills to ensure future success in the workplace.
Using these high interest novels would be a great opportunity to instill in our students an appreciation for reading while also improving their technical knowledge. Improving their literacy skills will help ensure their future success in the workplace.
Being a center focused on technology education, no media center is available on site. Creating specialized classroom libraries will be a great resource to promote literacy skills in our students.
