Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in an inner city high school in Massachusetts. Our large school is divided into six smaller schools and my school's concentration is Business, Management, and Finance. My students are sophomores and many are from low income homes. Many of the classes have special education students included in the regular classrooms.
Students in the tenth grade are required to read at least four novels and they must pass a state administered test in order to receive their high school diploma. The problem--we do not have a classroom library and we are rarely able to read the required novels due to the large number of students. Teachers must share the novels and often, you may not ever get the opportunity to read many of the books because you cannot get the books. There are about 75 novels of a particular title that roughly 500 students have to share throughout the year. Many years, students miss the opportunity to read a moving book because it was unavailable.
My classroom needs 35 copies of the novel "Night" by Elie Wiesel. This book is enjoyed and appreciated and required reading for sophomores. It can become a part of my classroom library and will be available to my students at any time during the school year. They will read it and enjoy it. Also, many students use this book as a springboard for many of their compositions. It is an extraordinary memoir that teaches many lessons to young people.
Your donation will enable my students to choose and read a profound book. It will provide a classroom library with books of merit. My students will love this book and learn to appreciate reading.
