My Students

Our school library does not have enough books on all levels. We are in a rural community with a high poverty level. Books open doors for the children's imagination and learning.

We are an elementary school Pre-K through grade 8.

Our student population is about 200 in a normal year. Ninety percent of our children are on free or reduced lunch. Most students come from illiterate homes or very limited educational backgrounds. Compounding this problem is that many people in our county are unemployed or are low wage earners.

My Project

These books will open a world and provide our students an opportunity to learn and imagine things that they are currently unfamiliar with. The nonfiction books will improve our students vocabulary and the knowledge of the real world. As always fiction books will entertain and keep them excited about reading.

Our school is in rural Appalachia.

We strive to be the center of the community not only for the students but for the parents as well. Improving our library collection will enrich the lives of all those in our community.
