My favorite part of teaching is watching my students explore their world and use the information they learn in their lives. The best way to see this is to incorporate as much nonfiction into the curriculum as I can. I teach 1st and 2nd grade gifted children in Louisiana, and they LOVE nonfiction. They love to learn about new topics and tell everyone about them. They really get excited about researching a new topic and creating something about it, like a diorama or a poster. Being able to do this really helps them to become creative, critical, independent thinkers.
The possibilities are boundless. However, my students have shown interest in topics that I don't have any fiction AND nonfiction books on. The Magic Tree House series is their favorite series, and it is perfect for what we need in the classroom.
The resources I need are class sets of 2 different titles of the Magic Tree House series, and the nonfiction companions that go with them. With these resources, my students will be able to read a fiction story in guided reading groups, based on a topic they enjoy, and learn the skills for the week. They can then use the nonfiction companion to research the topic, create their project, and tie the learning into their real life.
Your help will enable my students to become creative, critical, independent thinkers by giving them access to the materials they need. Having these materials will also help to connect the learning to their lives and make it more meaningful to them.
