The students at our school are a diverse, transient bunch of eager and kind little people. Our school does not have the funds for supporting the many enriching projects and programs that make up the backbone of many of our more affluent neighboring schools, but we make up for it by providing a safe and stable place to learn. Our students are hopeful, energetic, and inquisitive. They love to learn and know that education is a right worth fighting for.
My Project
Katherine Patterson once said, "It is not enough to simply teach children to read; we have to give them something worth reading. Something that will stretch their imaginations—something that will help them make sense of their own lives and encourage them to reach out toward people whose lives are quite different from their own." These books were thoughtfully chosen to do just that. They will enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create while helping children find the story that sparks meaning for them.
With these new books, my students will encounter characters who reflect themselves and those around them so they may better understand the world they inhabit.
These books will be used for various purposes. Some, like My Rotten Redheaded Older Brother, have been chosen as mentor texts for writing instruction about personal narratives. Others, like My Little Gifts, are intended as read alouds to supplement social-emotional learning instruction. Lastly, other stories have been chosen for their cultural significance. Cora Cooks Pancit, for example, reflects the rich Filipino culture many of my students come from and will tie seamlessly into the culture projects they complete at the beginning of the year. Each book is worth reading for its ability to stretch one's imagination and make sense of our world.
