Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Curious, talented, thoughtful. Those are the words that come to mind when I think about my students. They are readers, writers, leaders, and thinkers who are learning to stretch their brains on increasingly challenging work. They amaze me every day with their insights, impress me with their questions, and make me laugh with their jokes. I love spending each day with them and giving them lessons, texts, and experiences that will help them grow.

My students want to be doctors, lawyers, engineers, inventors, activists, and they know that putting in the effort now will pay off later in pursuit of their dreams.

As students at a high-poverty school, however, they are not always afforded the opportunities other kids get, from fancy trips, to cutting-edge electives, down to having basic supplies or exciting new books to read. They are so proud of the work they do and the progress they're making, but they need additional resources to take their learning to the next level.

My Project

Getting the right books into the right hands is my main mission as an English teacher, and this project will put dozens of great reads directly in the hands of kids just starting high school.

Research (and common sense) show that the only way to become a better reader is to read--all the time.

And the best way to do that is to fall in love with reading. This project will refresh my classroom library with popular series, brand new releases, and enticing books at all different levels that will keep kids excited and engaged in their reading at the beginning of a new school year.
