This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My 6th-8th grade Reading Intervention and Special Education classroom is situated in Southeast Washington, DC at a Title I school where 100% of my students qualify for free-and-reduced lunch and 100% are students of color. My students come from historically underserved neighborhoods within Ward 8 of our nation's capital, and by the time they reach middle school, they are often several grade levels behind students from wealthier areas.
However, regardless of their zip code, my students are inquisitive and excited to learn, and to harness their potential, they need access to diverse and high-interest books.
This year, they have participated in and initiated conversations about social justice and equity in everything from our discussion of how natural disasters impact people and communities, to individual identity, to child labor around the world, to the Lost Boys of Sudan. While I have worked to provide them with stories that they enjoy and are able to read, I hope to support them more abundantly with increased access to literature and nonfiction books this year. Will you help us?
My Project
Most of the 11-15 year old students in my Reading Intervention classes have attended poor, urban schools for most of their lives. As such, they have not always been able to access quality resources and academic support.
Great books change lives, and my students deserve to be deeply affected by literature that they can identify with and escape to.
My kids have made amazing gains this year, not only in their scores, but in their abilities to think critically, have respectful discussions, write about the world around them, and empathize with others. These books will keep our momentum going!
