My Students

My school is a PreK-8th grade institution and the hub of a small, migrant farming community. Financial hardship is the norm for our (mostly Latino) families, meaning our students' homes are (probably) not very literate environments.

Our middle schoolers strike me as kind, curious, respectful and hard working.

Many of them have spent their entire academic careers together, and are related to one another.

The students at my school have also developed plenty of empathy by serving as translators within their families.

My Project

From graphic novel versions of the Percy Jackson series to books about famous athletes and important cultural figures like Cesar Chavez, this project is designed to get (and/or keep) our middle schoolers reading.

When I meet with my group of 6th-8th graders after school, we will engage in book speed dating, FlipGrid recordings, conferencing, and (of course) lots and lots of READING.

We will also create book spine poetry, book commercials, and "shelfie awards."

The students and I will set goals, read across multiple genres, and celebrate a love of reading during our time together. Simply giving these kids additional time to read in a quiet, literate environment 1-2 times each week will be powerful.
