I am an elementary school Library Media Tech that loves working and challenging the students to read. I like to make it fun and give positive praise, reinforcement, and to do what I can to help them achieve their reading goals.
I am faced with many challenges since I don't have funding or a regular budget to purchase books.
Many of our students are being raised in single parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "typical".
Our school is trying hard to focus on their potential and growth while they are with us. I may not be able to control their home lives, however, I can certainly control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest readers to continue on a path of academic excellence.
My Project
We don't have enough biographies and other books that fit the criteria that our teachers are requesting. The books that our students need must be in their ZPD range (The Zone of Proximal Development). The ZPD gives the book-level range from which a student should be selecting books for optimal growth in reading without frustration. The ZPD is used with the program Accelerated Reader that we use within our district.
It's very frustrating when students come to the library to check out books that have at least 2.0 + points to read and we don't have very many to offer them.
Most of our biographies have .05 or 1.0 to read. The teachers are requesting that they get books with at least 2 + points. With your help we can get these great books into their hands.
