Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them."
Ray Bradbury
I have a group of 23 high energy learners.
Many students do not have access to quality literature outside of school and are easily drawn into learning material that they can relate to. The high poverty demographic of our school causes these kids to lack in home support because of lack of language and money to buy additional resources needed to learn and achieve.
My Project
There's nothing more that I love than being able to interact with my students while reading high-interest literature. Sideways Stories from Wayside School are fun stories that will be used for literature circles, small group instruction, and whole group read alouds. Students will engage in small group and whole group conversations about events in each story and interactions between characters. Students will then share their responses with peers and their families to reel others into the excitement occurring within the story they're reading. As a result of reading these books, students will learn valuable life lessons regarding empathy, compassion, in a fun creative way.
Donations will help to open student minds to the world of reading.
They will see that reading is not only about work and fluency, but that reading is fun and it stimulates thinking and creativity. In today's world reading is being replaced with video games, and television. We have to bring back literature to our children. We have to teach them to appreciate and love what books can do.
