I teach in a rural community in Kentucky at a Title I school. My students at our school come from many different economic backgrounds and need many different resources at school to help better their education!
Many of my students LOVE to read, but lack the resources to grasps their interests.
I teach a 6th-grade class where my students range from below average to high average with innovate thinking. My students have a wide range of interests. One key factor in the positive influence of voluntary reading allows students to seek out high interest level books and participate of their own volition.
Students who read independently become better readers, score higher on achievement tests in all subject areas, and have greater content knowledge than those who do not read. Vocabulary exposure increases with daily reading time and students are more likely to enhance their vocabulary more through reading than direction instruction. Reading is the key to success!
My Project
Reading is the biggest factor of growth in literacy. Adding the book titles that my students have carefully selected will not only add to my inherited, aged classroom library, but will allow my students the opportunity to conveniently seek out a variety of new genres and authors from the comforts of our classroom. Students need to be exposed to a range of language, topics, genres, and perspectives, books that reflect the diverse, multicultural nature of our society. I've selected book title sets that I know they will be excited to read. My students have continuously expressed their interest in reading books with series. For example, some of the book titles I've selected include: "The Hogwarts Library" is a fantasy, 3 book set; "Game of Thrones" is a fantasy set of 5 books; "The Lord of the Rings" is a fantasy/science fiction set of 5.
Classroom libraries are important because students need immediate and frequent access to books to encourage reading.
It is also important for students to be able to recommend books to each other. The more book titles that I can provide for my students, the more I can influence their desire to read. Please help my students have these reading opportunities with the convenience and ease within our very own room.
