I teach 5th grade and by the time students get to me, most of them have made up their mind about their love of reading, or lack thereof in most cases. My mission is to open their minds to a limitless world through books.
There are more than 30 languages spoken at my elementary school.
We are the most diverse school in our district. It is amazing to watch them interact on a daily basis. It is a constant reminder that prejudice is something that is learned not inherited. Most of my students are learning English as a second language. While this presents its own challenges, it also provides us with very authentic learning experiences and unique connections.

My Project
Imagine you are in 5th grade. You wake up thinking today is like any other. You have no idea that today is a day you will remember forever. Today is the day that you are going to see a novel come to life in front of your very eyes. Today when you walk into your class you are going to be walking into a peach that takes up your entire classroom. Your room will be covered in orange tarps, with orange lights twinkling their way through, and giant insects adorning the walls. You will come to know each of these insects, or characters, as you read the famous words of Roald Dahl. The aroma of peaches will fill the classroom as you embark on this fantastic journey with James.
For years, my students will remember the magic they felt while reading James and the Giant Peach in their very own giant peach.
It is my hope that this experience will cultivate a love of reading that will continue throughout their lives.
