My students need books and book sets that will provide support in difficult times, that provide information about careers, that encourage positive reading habits, and that support positive classroom behavior.
Our students have been through a difficult year as a result of our district's tragedy. My role is one of support and encouragement and so I hope to provide books that will support their emotional recovery as well as encourage their exploration into books they might not otherwise read.
We have a wonderful group of resilient students who have faced unimaginable sadness and trauma this year.
We have an economically diverse group of families living in a suburban area. We are a small school which allows for greater community spirit to develop.
My Project
My primary goal is to provide our students with books that will address the variety of emotional needs they have right now. Many of our students have experienced loss and sadness as a result of our district's tragedy. It is through these books that I hope to reach students experiencing a myriad of emotions due to these sad events. I believe that by learning to cope with these experiences and recognize their own needs, our students will grow emotionally.
Further, it is my hope to address the reading needs of a group of students who have turned away from reading. The high/low book series will address these needs and hopefully bring them back to a love of reading they once had.
Books are the great equalizer in life.
If we can reach each child through a story, a strategy, or a temporary escape from sadness, then we have made a difference in their lives and that is the ultimate goal of every teacher.
