Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach a third-grade self-contained class in a small, and close-knit community north of Houston, TX. Eighty percent of our student population receives free or reduced-price lunch, and many of our families are still experiencing the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey.
My students are funny, sweet, active and caring third graders who are eager to learn and experience new things.
However, their reading abilities and interests vary. Their educational needs are met through small group instruction, dyslexia and RTI (intervention services), and other research-based teaching strategies.
My Project
My students love reading and always look forward to reading time during the school day. Our reading lesson consists of a short mini-lesson and a read-aloud from our current mentor text. Afterwards, my kiddos read books from their book bags for 45 minutes every day. While I am able to provide some books for our classroom library, the selections are limited.
By providing a classroom library, my students will be able to choose books on their reading level in order to develop reading skills that will help them become lifelong learners.
Additionally, reading will allow them to use their imagination and travel to different worlds while reading a book that is on their reading level. Most importantly, a classroom library that provides reading selections to address the needs and interests of my students will continue to help my students develop and maintain their love for reading.
