This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach English as a second language for a public school system. The school I work at is 100% free lunch. The students I work with are mainly from El Salvador. Some of them are separated from their families, and the rest who live with their families have very limited resources, but they love to learn and they are very appreciative to anything we give them at school (it could be something as simple as a sticker). Their families are hard labor workers, and they work for very long hours. But they do want the best for their kids and are also very appreciative to what we do with the kids at school.
I am also an immigrant to this country as well.
English is also my second language and that's how I connect to my students.
My Project
Reading comprehension is one deficient area among my students. Students will use the reading comprehension kit for reading intervention. The kits are reading skills specific such as making inferences, cause and effect, finding evidence.. . We will use them for a guided reading short session 3 times a week.
As for the daily language journal, it is a way to start a new systematic routine that will strengthen their language skills.
It will also be a tangible evidence of the students progress throughout the year.
The short targeted passages in the reading kits will help students advance their reading skills.
