My Spanish classroom is a place of challenge and discovery. I teach Spanish 1 and 2 Pre-AP this year, and students are learning the foundation of knowledge and skills they will need as they move forward in advanced studies. My goal is to help them improve their fluency and become more proficient in Spanish.
Reading in the target language will help my students increase their proficiency in ways nothing else can.
Multiple professional studies have shown that reading in the target language increases comprehension, improves vocabulary, and improves writing skills-just as it does in the student's first language.as a result, I use novels in my classroom bith in whole class lessons and during Free Volintary Reading times.
Since beginning to use novels last year, I have seen my students move up the proficiency scale much faster than before. Plus, the students are so excited that they understand what they are reading. One student told me, "I never thought I would be able to read a sentence in Spanish on my own and I just read an entire chapter by myself and understood it!" I love seeing the success stories unfold as they immerse themselves in Spanish!
My Project
Help me give my students more material to read! Since implementing novel studies in my classes, I have seen quicker and greater growth in the proficiency of my students.
My students need a wider variety of materials to choose from during our Free Voluntary Reading time each week in class.
The Scholastic Ahora, El Sol, and ¿Qué Tal? magazines will give them more leveled reading options to choose from, which will lead to improved reading comprehension skills and increased vocabulary for all my students at every level.
Also, these magazines have articles that will appeal to a wide variety of interests. Students are more likely to read when they are interested in the subject matter- no matter the language!
